ManyChat is a software tool that automates conversations in messaging apps. You set rules such as "when someone comments GUIDE under this reel, send them a DM with the link", and the tool replies for you, day and night. It works with Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok and Telegram, and it describes itself as a chat marketing platform.
It concerns creators, coaches and small brands who get more comments and messages than they can answer by hand, and who want those conversations to lead somewhere: a free download, an email signup, a product page. If you have ever typed the same link into forty DMs after a post did well, ManyChat is the kind of tool built for that problem.
What is ManyChat?
ManyChat is a no-code automation builder for direct messages and comments. You connect a social account, pick a trigger and design what happens next. Triggers include a comment on a post, a keyword in a DM, a reply to a Story or a Story mention. What happens next is a short conversation: a message, buttons, a question, a link, a request for an email address or phone number.
You build these conversations in two ways. Quick Automations are templates you fill in, for example "auto-DM links from comments" or "say hi to new followers". The Flow Builder is a visual canvas where you draw more complex paths with conditions, tags and branches. According to its site, ManyChat is an official Meta Business Partner and works with TikTok as a partner, which matters because automation on these apps depends on their official APIs.
ManyChat is not a store, a payment tool or a link in bio page. It does not host your products. It carries people from a social app to wherever the sale happens. It is also not a mass-DM tool: on Instagram, Meta does not let a business message someone who has not started the conversation first, and ManyChat's own site says so. The related vocabulary is auto DM, comment-to-DM, keyword trigger, flow and broadcast.
Why it matters
Comments and DMs are where buying intent shows up on social media. Someone who writes "price?" under a video wants an answer now, not in six hours. The faster the answer, the more of that intent survives.
Take a coach with 12,000 Instagram followers who posts a reel about a free budgeting worksheet. The caption says "comment WORKSHEET and I will send it". The reel gets 400 comments. Answering by hand takes about 30 seconds per DM, so more than three hours, and most replies arrive late. With an automation, each commenter gets the DM within seconds. If the DM asks for an email address before sending the link and 45% of commenters share it, that is 180 new subscribers on the coach's email list from one post. If 3% of those later buy a $97 course, that is five sales, or $485, from a reel that would otherwise have produced a pile of unanswered messages.
This is why creators consider the tool. The value is less in the automation itself and more in the speed and consistency it adds to a moment when attention is high.
How it works
The setup follows the same steps whatever the channel:
- Connect a channel. You log in with the social account. Instagram needs a professional account, and TikTok automations need a TikTok Business account. ManyChat's site notes that TikTok automation is not available in every country yet, so check your region.
- Choose a trigger. A keyword in a comment, a keyword in a DM, a Story reply, a new follower or a link that opens a chat.
- Write the reply. A first message, often with a button so the person answers once, which opens the conversation on the platform's terms.
- Collect data. Ask for an email or phone number, tag the contact by interest, store answers in custom fields.
- Send the payoff. A link to the freebie, the product page or the booking page.
- Follow up. On some channels and plans you can send broadcasts to contacts who opted in, or hand the chat to a human in the shared inbox.
Pricing is based on active contacts, meaning people who interact with your automations in a month. At the time of writing (September 2026), ManyChat's pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 with 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels and up to 4 active automations, and paid plans named Essential, Pro, Business and Advanced, from $14 a month billed annually for 250 contacts up to $139 a month billed annually for 25,000 contacts, with extra contacts paid per contact. The page says prices depend on your billing country and exclude tax. AI replies are included from the Pro plan up.
Benchmarks and examples
Typical setups for creators and small brands look like this:
- The freebie reel. A creator posts a tip, asks viewers to comment a keyword, and sends a PDF or a video link by DM after collecting an email.
- The product question. A small jewelry brand sets a keyword trigger for "price" and "shipping" so that common questions get an instant answer with the product link.
- The launch waitlist. A course creator uses Story replies to build a list of people who want the enrollment link on launch day.
- The FAQ assistant. A shop answers sizing, delivery times and returns in DMs, with a button to reach a human.
Results vary a lot by audience. As a rough frame, a keyword post that earns 200 comments and an email capture rate of 30 to 50% gives 60 to 100 contacts. Treat any number you see in testimonials as one account's result, not a promise.
Common mistakes
- Automating without an offer. A fast DM with nothing worth clicking still converts poorly. The automation carries the offer, it does not replace it.
- Keeping contacts only inside the tool. DM contacts live on rented land. If the account has a problem, you lose them. Move people to email as soon as it makes sense.
- Writing like a robot. A cold, generic reply feels like spam. Write the DM the way you would type it yourself.
- Ignoring platform rules. Meta and TikTok set what automated messages may do. Breaking those rules risks the account, whatever the tool.
- Underestimating contact growth. Because pricing follows active contacts, one viral post can move you into a higher tier. Watch your usage after a spike.
Best practices
- Start with one flow. Build a single comment-to-DM automation for your best-performing content type before adding more.
- Ask for the email early. Collect the address before sending the link, and say plainly what the person gets.
- Link to a page that sells. Send people to a page with a clear price and a short checkout, not to a homepage.
- Tag by interest. Label contacts by the keyword they used so your follow-up email matches what they asked for.
- Keep a human exit. Add a "talk to me" button for questions the automation cannot answer.
- Measure the full path. Track comments, DMs sent, emails collected and sales, not only replies.
In Roctify
Roctify does not send automated DMs. The two tools fit together. ManyChat starts the conversation in the app, and the link it sends can open your Roctify link-in-bio page or store, where the product, the price and the checkout sit in one place. The email you collect can feed Roctify's email marketing and forms (Creator plan and up), and a discount code in the DM gives you a simple way to see which automation drove which sale.
The difference in approach is about where the money moves. ManyChat charges for the conversation layer. Roctify charges a plan fee for the store layer and takes 0% transaction fees on every plan, so only Stripe's or PayPal's processing fee applies to the sale that follows the DM. Social selling tools and a post scheduler are on Roctify's roadmap, not shipped today.
FAQ
Is ManyChat free?
There is a free plan. At the time of writing (September 2026) it covers 25 active contacts a month, 2 channels and up to 4 active automations, with ManyChat branding on the first message. Paid plans add more contacts, unlimited automations, broadcasts, AI replies and more users.
Can ManyChat message all my Instagram followers?
No. On Instagram, the person has to start the conversation, for example by commenting a keyword or sending a DM. ManyChat can then reply. For repeat messages, it offers opt-in DM lists, which only reach people who agreed to receive them.
Do I still need a store if I use ManyChat?
Yes, if you sell. ManyChat delivers the link, but the purchase happens elsewhere: a checkout, a store or a link-in-bio page with payments. The shorter the path from DM to paid order, the more of the traffic you keep.
